Wastewater Regulation/Monitoring
Programs that issue permits which regulate the direct discharge of wastewater to surface waters by industrial, commercial and municipal facilities. The permits limit the amount of pollutants that may be discharged. If the concentration of pollutants is too high, or if its discharges endanger public health or the environment, the facility is in violation of its permit and may be fined and/or forced to upgrade its operation. The permits require compliance with all government standards, where these exist, and may also require additional controls based on local conditions.
Programs that test the composition of wastewater flowing through the municipal sewer and storm water drainage systems to ensure proper treatment prior to discharge to surface waters. Wastewater discharge testing may also be used to detect instances of illegal industrial discharges and their possible sources.
