The Dyslexia Awareness Network (DAN) is a not-for-profit corporation, started in January 2014 by staff of the former Children's Dyslexia Center of Illinois. Joined by parents and local tutors and teachers, DAN operates with the mission to improve the lives of children and individuals with dyslexia, and related learning disabilities, through high-quality, professional development for teachers, the public and the families of the students it supports.
DAN promotes research-based approaches that teach reading the way children and individuals actually learn. Related methods have been derived from the work of the late Samuel T. Orton and others.
Working as partners with schools, teachers, parents and other experts, DAN strives to eliminate educational inequities and create excellent learning opportunities for all students.

Monthly Community Awareness Meetings.
Description
DAN holds monthly awareness meetings at the Peoria Library - North Branch location. These meetings are interactive and are intended to educate the community on the basics of dyslexia and any other topics community members are interested in learning more about. We hold discussions, deliver presentations, show movies, host panel discussions featuring psychologists, experts, tutors, children and adults with dyslexia. Recent topics covered in these meetings include: -The Basics of Dyslexia -Hearing from Kids with dyslexia -Hearing from adults with dyslexia -Presentations from an ISBE mediator speaking on how to work with your child's school -Becoming an advocate for your student in their school

Description
The Dyslexia Awareness Network offers support services intended to enable teachers, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends of students with Dyslexia to be a strong advocate for their care in their school. This includes ensuring there is appropriate recognition of their diagnosed learning disability, reasonable modifications granted them in their studies and, most importantly, their due care and equal treatment under the law. Accommodations include, but not limited to: -Extended time on tests and homework -Word Banks (Word banks provide the support learners with dyslexia need with new or difficult words, reducing the learning curve often associated with introducing new vocabulary) -Have tests and homework assignments read aloud -Option of delivering oral reports, instead of written -Leniency on grading grammar and spelling errors

Once a student has been evaluated and diagnosed by a trained psychologist, parents can call the Center to schedule tutoring sessions. Sessions are 45-50 minutes and are scheduled twice a week on a Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday schedule. Tutors deliver tutoring services on a one-on-one basis with each student, using the research-based Orton-Gillingham Multi-sensory Approach.

Special Notes/Funding
Becoming a Certified Tutor.
Description
We facilitate and deliver Orton-Gillingham Tutor Training, a language-based instructional program that is multi-sensory, structured, sequential, and cumulative program in a year-long class there are 45 class hours and 80 practicum hours. The supervised practicum will include tutoring two students at the center. Lessons are 45-50 minutes, twice a week, starting in September and going through May (with possibility of a 12 day summer session). We have breaks for Thanksgiving, Christmas, a handful of holidays in between, and Spring Break. We require a bachelorâs degree. We will, however, consider training a tutor with an Associateâs degree. The decision to train is the sole discretion of the Director. We require 20 class hours during the summer sessions. The remaining required hours will be spread out throughout the year, most likely on Saturdays 9am-3pm or 10am-2pm once a month and will be scheduled as a group. The class will look closely at phonology, morphology, etymology, and orthography. The training and tutor sessions will be held at the center, located in the Masonic Lodge basement at 2900 West Lake Ave, Peoria, IL. After becoming certified, a tutor can stay on at the Center and get paid for their sessions.

The tuition is $2000. This cost includes textbooks and class materials. Tuition is due in full on the first day of training.
