Central Illinois Stars of Hope
Description:
Partnering with the OSF Illinois Neurological Institute (INI), the Stars of Hope team is dedicated to improving the lives of patients and families affected by movement disorders. We are husbands & wives, mothers & fathers, brothers & sisters and friends & caregivers of people impacted by Parkinson's, Huntington's, Multiple System Atrophy, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and other movement disorders.
We Support:
Parkinson's Disease (PD): Parkinson!s disease affects the nerve cells in the brain that produce dopamine. Parkinson!s disease symptoms include muscle rigidity, tremors, and changes in speech and gait. After diagnosis, treatments can help relieve symptoms, but there is no cure.
!
Huntington's Disease (HD): A devastating, hereditary, degenerative brain disorder that results in a loss of cognitive, behavioral and physical control, and for which there is presently no cure. HD slowly diminishes the affected individual's ability to walk, think, talk and reason. Eventually, a person with HD becomes totally dependent upon others for his or her care. Patients of HD have a 50 percent risk of passing this disease to their children regardless of gender. Although medications can relieve some symptoms in certain individuals, research has yet to find a means of conquering or even slowing the deadly progression of HD.
!
Multiple System Atrophy (MSA): MSA is a rare sporadic progressive neurological disorder characterized by a varying combination of symptoms and signs. Affected individuals may experience cerebellar signs such as progressive impairment of the ability to coordinate voluntary movements (cerebellar ataxia); and impaired functioning of the portion of the nervous system (autonomic nervous system) that regulates certain involuntary body functions (autonomic failure) such as heart rate, blood pressure, sweating, and bowel and bladder control. The exact cause of MSA is unknown.
!
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS): ALS is a disease in which certain nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord slowly die. These nerve cells are called motor neurons, and they control the muscles that allow you to move the parts of your body. ALS is also called Lou Gehrig's disease.
